Nice Brew Racing
Hailing from Lewes in East Sussex, Nice Brew Racing have just dropped a swanky new collection called Ruhetag. We spoke to NBR founder MJ, to see what inspired the new kit...
The team was started for a group of friends to race and train together — we didn’t want to be part of a club in the traditional sense with the usual commitments because we’re often time poor. The main driver was always to be able to race in a kit we loved being in and that meant designing our own. It’s a really small team with a core of four riders locally and three more further afield.
The philosophy of the team is mostly not to take ourselves or cycling too seriously. Essentially we all love riding our bikes and feeling like we look good whilst doing that. Last year was a great year for the women’s team with plenty of good race results and moving up through the categories. We race crits and road races with the odd time trial and CX race thrown in.
2019 is a bit of a turning point for the team as we were approached by a bigger local team to sign for them. The benefits in joining were too hard to turn down, so we’ve all moved across to Unknown Rider Development Team. This will hopefully propel the women’s team in their success especially. This was part of the inspiration for the rest day kit. NBR will remain our second claim team and we’ll race in our colours in time trials and CX races. We decided to have some fun with the kit this year, make it less race focussed and play up the ‘rest day’ vibe. We’ll mostly wear the kit for training and hopefully plenty of cafe rides.
I spend my time off the bike listening to jazz and hoping my MG won’t break down, so I was keen to bring some of that language into the kit. The idea of chilling out and taking it easy and just enjoying the smooth rides, Smoothness is something that followed through in the idea of a zipless jersey, we were struck by it when Ed presented the idea. The clean lines seemed like too good an opportunity to miss and it gives the kit that extra something special.
Milltag made our skin suits last year and we loved them. I wanted the sleeves from the jersey on a skin suit and the guys happily obliged, which is incredible service. The bibs and jersey are possibly the best I’ve worn — the fit is perfect and comfort second to none. If a kit looks good but performs well too it’s hard to beat, that married with the expertise Milltag have in making your design come to life makes it an easy choice of kit partner. I can honestly say it’s a pleasure creating a kit with the Milltag team, they make everything seem so effortless.
